Nursing Sports Bra vs Regular Sports Bra: Do You Really Need a Different One?

At some point, usually when you look through your old gym drawer for the first time in the weeks or months post-birth, when you're finally in a headspace to get back to rebuilding your fitness, you think: do I actually need to buy a nursing sports bra, or will my usual one work?

It is a good question. You already have sports bras, and some were probably fairly expensive. Buying another one for a body that changes every week can feel overwhelming.

So, let's clear this up.

The short answer is yes: if you are breastfeeding and want to stay active, a nursing sports bra is worth it. I know we would say that, but hear me out - and stay with me, because there's a whole section further down on the times we'd tell you not to bother at all.

Regular sports bras are not bad, but they serve a different purpose. One keeps you supported during exercise. The other does that and also lets you feed your baby easily and conveniently, without struggling to take it off in an awkward place. That makes a big difference, especially when you're trying so hard to fit some semblance of an exercise routine around your new, probably very hungry baby.

What a Regular Sports Bra Is Built To Do

A regular sports bra has one main job: to control movement. It compresses, supports, and keeps everything in place while you run, lift, or chase your toddler. If you're not pregnant or breastfeeding, that's usually enough.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, your bust can change size not just every month, but even throughout the day. A bra that fit before may now dig in, ride up, or not fit at all. Most importantly, a regular sports bra does not make feeding easy. To nurse, you have to take the whole thing off, or squeeze your boob under tight elastic, which is not quick or discreet when your baby is hungry, let alone remotely comfortable for you.

What a Nursing Sports Bra Does Differently

A nursing sports bra gives you the support you expect from good activewear, plus features that help when you're feeding. These include one-handed clips for easy access, soft fabric-backed fastenings that are gentle on sensitive skin, and a flexible design that adapts as your body changes. It combines support and practicality, which is what Natal Active is known for. You can read more about how we got here on our story page.

This is where it really matters. Post-pregnancy breasts are often heavier, more sensitive, and can change size during the day, especially between feeds. A bra that can't adjust quickly becomes uncomfortable fast - and prolonged pressure on a full breast is something a lot of midwives and lactation consultants will advise you to avoid. Support and compression are not the same thing, and when you're feeding it's the first you want, not the second. A nursing sports bra is made to adapt, so you don't have to choose between comfort and exercise.

Before You Buy: The Times You Don't Need One

Here is the part you would not expect a company that sells nursing sports bras to write.

Sometimes the answer is no. Or at least, not yet. We would far rather you spent your money on the right thing at the right time than bought something that sits in a drawer with the tags on, so here is when we would tell you to keep it in your pocket.

If nothing is actually uncomfortable, you don't have a problem to solve. It's the simplest test there is and it's worth applying before you spend anything. If your week is walking, buggy laps, the school run and a supermarket shop, your bust isn't moving much. A soft, unwired nursing bra will be comfortable, easy enough to feed in and probably cheaper too. Stick with that instead and come back to us when you're wanting to work out again.

In the first six to eight weeks, maybe not. You are feeding eight to twelve times a day and mostly not going anywhere. A sports bra is something you put on to go and do a thing - and at that stage, the thing probably hasn't started yet. An unwired nursing bra or a soft sleep bra will serve you well, and there is genuinely no rush.

If you're exclusively pumping or bottle feeding, you don't need nursing clips at all. What you need is a well-fitting regular sports bra in your current size - don't pay for an opening you are never going to undo. And if you're pumping regularly, a dedicated hands-free pumping bra is the better thing to spend on. We don't make one - yet!

One exception to all of the above. If you're a G cup or above, the bar drops a long way. At that size, "nothing's really moving" stops being true. A brisk walk can be genuinely uncomfortable without proper support, and the early weeks are often when it's hardest. That is the whole reason the Freyja exists, because a G cup needs something more.

If none of those describe you, and you're breastfeeding and trying to get back to moving properly, then yes - the difference is real and it's worth the money. Here's why.

The Support Question: Is a Nursing Bra Actually Sporty Enough?

This is the most common concern we hear, and it makes sense. The good news is that a quality nursing sports bra does not sacrifice support for convenience. It is designed to give you both.

For low and medium-impact activities like Pilates, strength training, brisk walks, or circuit classes where you might need to stop and feed, our Vitality nursing sports bra performs beautifully. If you need something for higher-impact activities, the Artemis style is your go-to.

Comfort and support are not opposites here. They are the main goal.

Three Nursing Sports Bras Worth Knowing

If you're ready to make the switch, these three Natal Active styles will cover your needs.

The Vitality Nursing Sports Bra is an easy, everyday choice. It's a medium-impact, crop-style bra that's comfortable enough to wear from your morning workout through the school run and beyond. The open-back design looks stylish and stays supportive. Single-hand nursing clips make feeding on the go simple and discreet, and it comes with a matching extender so it fits from pregnancy to postnatal. There is a removable foam insert for shape and coverage, and the fabric-backed clips prevent any plastic from digging in. It's the bra you'll reach for without thinking, which is what makes it so useful.

For higher-impact workouts, the Artemis style is the nursing sports bra to reach for. With straps that can be worn straight or cross-backed for extra support, and — like the Vitality — a matching extender so it can be worn through pregnancy too, it adjusts to fit B to G cup sizing. Named best maternity sports bra by Women's Running magazine, this is our best-selling style for mums getting back to their favourite workouts.

For fuller busts, the Freyja Nursing Sports Bra fits up to a J cup with a medium level of support. Based on Natal Active's award-winning Artemis design, the Freyja has a wider band for more support and wider straps that won't dig into your shoulders. The higher front and underarm offer more coverage, and the back clasp lets you wear the straps straight for everyday ease or crossed for that extra bit of hold when you need it. Like its sister style, it comes with a matching extender and fabric-backed feeding clips, so it supports you from pregnancy through breastfeeding and beyond.

All three sit at the same price point, and all three are designed around the same belief: that staying active as a mum should never mean putting up with activewear that doesn't meet your needs.

So, Do You Really Need a Different One?

If you're not there yet - still in the early weeks, still finding your feet, still mostly walking - then no, not neccesarily yet, and there is no hurry at all. A soft nursing bra will do everything you need it to for now.

But if you are breastfeeding and want to stay active, the truth is that a nursing sports bra will make things much easier for you and your baby. A regular sports bra can support you, but it cannot help you feed your baby, adjust to your changing shape, or save you from having to get undressed to nurse. A nursing sports bra does all of this without sacrificing support.

Your body has achieved something amazing. The right bra should support you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just use my old sports bra while breastfeeding?

You can, but you will probably find it too tight, too loose, or too awkward for feeding. Regular bras are not made to adjust to a changing bust or allow easy nursing, which is why a nursing sports bra is so helpful.

Do I need one straight away after birth?

Probably not. In the first six to eight weeks most mums are feeding constantly and not doing much else, and a soft unwired nursing or sleep bra is probably the more useful buy. Come to a sports bra when you're actually ready to start moving again - iideally once your supply has settled a bit, so you're buying for the bust you'll have rather than the one you have this week.

What if I'm pumping rather than feeding directly?

Then you don't need nursing clips. A well-fitting regular sports bra in your current size will do the job. If you're pumping often, a dedicated hands-free pumping bra is the thing worth spending on - we don't  currently make one (although you can also use the Artemis style for this purpose), but we'd still tell you to get one.

Are nursing sports bras supportive enough for exercise?

Yes absolutely. A good nursing sports bra, like those from Natal Active, is made to give real support for all types of activities such as Pilates, yoga, strength training and running, while still making it easy to feed.

What size should I buy when my bust keeps changing?

We suggest picking your pre-pregnancy size. The bras are made to stretch with your bust, and the included extender helps the band fit comfortably during late pregnancy as well as give you the best support after birth.

Which Natal Active bra is right for larger cup sizes?

The Freyja is made for G to J cups, with a wider band, wider straps, and more coverage for extra support. The Vitality fits up to an F and the Artemis up to a G, and both are versatile everyday choices.

Can I wear a nursing sports bra all day, not just to exercise?

Yes, definitely. All of our bras are designed to be soft and comfortable enough to wear all day, from your workout through the rest of your activities. Many mums do just that.
